Thomas Hine - Forgive My Future (2013)

Zo heel af en toe gebeurd het. Een album dat al bij de eerste tonen je interesse wekt. Vorige week gebeurde dat gelukkig weer eens. De gelukkige was ditmaal de voor mij onbekende singer/songwriter Thomas Hine met zijn album “Forgive My Future”. En niet alleen voor mij is Hine de grote onbekende. Het lijkt wel of heel muziekminnend internet pas dit jaar kennis maakt met deze muzikant uit Colorado. Hine lijkt een van dé nieuwkomers van 2013 te worden. En dat voor iemand met inmiddels al vijf albums achter zijn naam.

Het album opent met rustig gitaarspel en de lieflijke klanken van een xylofoon waarmee Hine in “Dance for Days” een gemoedelijke sfeer weet te creëren die het gehele album voortduurt. Een sfeer die bij tijd en wijle lijkt terug te grijpen op de grote singer/songwriters van begin jaren ’70. Artiesten zoals Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young en Iain Matthews. Zijn eigen stijl houdt het midden tussen americana, folk en popmuziek en hij weet daar een alleraardigst geheel van te maken. Bijvoorbeeld het intermezzo “Old Troubles” wat met zijn vocal harmony uitblinkt in eenvoud en schoonheid. Het album vervolgt met “Bright Shining Mountains”, het kwetsbare liefdesliedje “Tomorrow I Have My Doubts” en “Dance Harder”.

Bijna de gehele instrumentatie op “Forgive My Future” komt voor rekening van Thomas Hine. Daarnaast wordt hij op “Conquistadores (Lucky Boy Seven)” vocaal ondersteund door zuslief Sadie en is “Ploughman” een duet met niemand minder dan Thomas Denver Jonnson. Het album eindigt (de demo van “Dance Harder” buiten beschouwing gelaten) met het ruim zeven minuten durende “Should Have Stayed at Home”. In dit nummer wordt de hedendaagse kritische maatschappij mijns inziens treffend omschreven (“think I’m not …... enough”). Het enige puntje van kritiek dat ik bedenken is het feit dat dit album soms wel erg lo-fi en “home made” klinkt. Desalniettemin een van de leukste ontdekkingen van dit jaar.

Bojoura - Nightflight Nightsight (1968)

In tegenstelling tot veel jonge meisjes was het niet Bojoura’s (Raina van Melzen) droom om beroemd of überhaupt zangeres te worden. Het waren Frans Krassenburg en George Kooymans (Golden Earring), die zangles kregen van haar Bulgaarse moeder, die aan de wieg staan van haar carrière. Na een bevestigend antwoord op de praktische vraag; “kun je zingen?” kreeg Bojoura haar eerste liedje op een presenteerblaadje aangereikt. Ze was toen slechts 17 jaren jong. Op haar 20e levensjaar verscheen haar debuutsingle “Everybody’s Day”. Het nummer was een instant hit op de Nederlandse radio. Haar fraaie, feeërieke verschijning en het feit dat ze enkel mocht optreden in haar eigen tv-show “Vjoew”, creëert een mysterieus, bijna mystiek imago om de Haagse zangeres.

Het gros van de nummers op “Nightflight Nightsight” komt van de hand van George Kooymans en Rinus Gerritsen. Het album is verder opgevuld met enkele covers waaronder “Holiday” (Bee Gees) en “That’s How Strong My Love Is”, bekend van Otis Redding en the Rolling Stones. Bojoura’s kristalheldere doch breekbare stem doet bij tijd en wijle denken aan Marianne Faithfull of in mindere mate Joni Mitchell, maar heeft toch een compleet eigen klank. Het album is een fraai geheel van beatmuziek vermengd met de typische psychedelische pop-folkmuziek van eind jaren ‘60. Pas in 2010 wordt het album uitgebracht op cd door de Engelse platenfirma Rev-Ola.

Nu zijn wij elke vrijdagavond tussen 7 en 8 uur te horen op L-FM (de ene week live, de andere week in de herhaling). We proberen nog steeds aan elke uitzending een thema mee te geven.
